This pair has been in the works for at least three to four months, and now finally it will be floating around on the new owner James from Brooklyn. And I must first give credit to James for the majority of the design. This pair is what is truly meant by custom, to the degree that James, and with much help from his artist in residence wife Cassandra, spent hours sending me images and drawings of what this pair should turn out to look like. I would then take my interpretation from there and after a month or two we finally all decided on a design that fit James' conception. More on James later as I'm currently planning an interview with him about his frames and also his views on customization. These frames are not the first item that he has customized to his liking.
The frames are made from two woods. The fronts and the detail carvings on the outsides are made from stabilized amboyna burl and the majority of the temples are then made from a highly figured piece of bubinga. Both woods have a complete madness in their grain and fit together with their commonality of a reddish hue. In terms of construction this is most definitely the most complex pair I have yet been forced to complete. The biggest problem to solve was how to make a frame with four points of connection through hinges, eight separate hinges in all, and to still make the temple line up perfectly. If one of the hinges were off by fractions of millimeters the pair would not open and close correctly, but I did somehow pull this one out of the place which resides beneath my underpants. To make the temples close as well with a hinge on the bottom, very complex.
I'll try not to justify anymore and let images speak for these specs. Though first I will mention that frames as custom as these come with many phone conversations back and forth about minute details of design and all else construction. As small of detail as to "should this feather be here or 3mm over there" and "let me have complete control as to the Day of the Dead Skull's features". And a frame so custom comes with a price tag beginning at 2500 dollars.
i also had to make a special box for this pair.
